Ordinary Accidents
Ironically stumbled across this photo story by "accident" and was instantly hooked by the clever styling, photography and ultimately the innovative story idea. With a 1950s Mad Men / early 1960s styling of luxe silk suits and richly pleated cotton skirts you would assume the story would follow a successful and power female at work during this period. This has been flipped on its head in a more sophisticated way rather than a kitsch way. With the backdrop of New York marbled streets, the females are not independently power figures but embarrassments, probably enjoyed one too many glasses of whiskey in the advertising offices. By being dragged around like mannequins it changes the perspective of the female character as displaying a facade of empowerment when actually she is still disposable (a great reflection of the ongoing power struggle during society at this time). The use of cropping the images to ensure the face is not recognisable helps to embody this idea of being a mannequin and unimportant.
